Weddings Then and Now By Michelle D. Sanders

Michelle Sanders photoHow many of you remember weddings from 25 years ago, 10 years ago or even 3 years ago? Twenty five years ago the overall cost of a wedding was $16,000. Today, the average cost of a wedding is around $26,000 – $30,000. Back then the parents of the bride would pay for the wedding. Nowadays, the grooms parents are pitching in or couples are paying for their own.

Back then bridal gowns had the ballroom hoop under the dress and big and puffy was in, but now ….bridal dresses are all over the map, from the crop top dress, to pastels, or sleek and chic. Brides today are wearing different shades of white or walking down the aisle in floral prints. In the past brides would have a “going away” dress; today brides are changing into “the party dress”.

Bridesmaid dresses nowadays are more like everyday dresses that can be worn again to other events. The dresses back then would have to be altered in some way to be suitable for another event. Or, if you didn’t change the look of the bridesmaid dress it probably ended up with a collection of dresses that would never be worn again!

Weddings have changed over the years, from traditional to non-traditional, big and flashy, shiny and floral, to themes and destinations. The possibilities in planning this special day are unlimited. However, the one thing that will not change– you cannot and should not wear white to a wedding. It held true then and it for sure holds true now!
