Teens n Toiletries (TNT) By Maya Louis and GPI Chapter of Jack and Jill of America – Teen Group

The Greater Peoria, Illinois (GPI) Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is a national membership organization of mothers, dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. This year, the teens are collecting toiletries for the community. Many individuals do not have or cannot afford to buy the necessities to meet their daily needs that we often take for granted. The GPI teens are encouraging young people and collaborating with local schools and businesses to help collect and provide toiletries for children, youth, and adults in need. The GPI chapter has partnered with Dunlap High School, Richwoods High School, Dunlap Valley Middle School, Peoria Academy, Just Kidz Dentistry, Kumon, Molly Maid, Preckshot Pharmacy and other businesses in the community.

According to the 24/7 Wall St. study in October of 2016, the 61605 zip code population is roughly 15,870 and the poverty rate is 45%. In that district, 29% of people have no high school diploma, and 57% of adults are unemployed. Toiletries are the perfect items to donate because they are needed and used year round. Everyone needs toiletries to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to collect at least 1,000 toiletries. Collecting toiletries promotes healthy living, personal and dental hygiene, and a healthy sense of self-confidence.

The Peoria community can support the Teens n Toiletries campaign by dropping off new toiletries to any of the listed locations by March 19, 2017. Toiletries may include soap, shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, lotion, deodorant, tissues, etc. Please contact Jameka Golden at (309) 798-7970 or Marjorie Parent at (309) 370-8617 for more information or any questions.
