Peoria Park Board Trustee Robert L. Johnson Presented With 20 Year Service Award

Robert_L__Johnson 2On January 13, 2016 family, friends and community members gathered at the Bonnie W. Nobel Center to honor Robert L. Johnson, Peoria Park Board Trustee, Southern District. During the board meeting Trustee Johnson was presented with a 20 year Service Award in recognition of outstanding contributions, community leadership and service to advance Parks, Recreation and Conservation in the State of Illinois as a member of the Pleasure Driveway and Park District of Peoria Board of Trustees.

Robert L. Johnson, Trustee, Peoria Park DistrictRobert L. Johnson Sr. was appointed to the Board as Southern District Trustee in 1995, reelected in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013 elections. Robert has served as Vice President of the Board in 1999, 2006 and 2011. He has a record of community service through neighborhood associations and school advisory groups. He is an inductee of the African American Hall of Fame Museum, Inc. and has been recognized for his efforts in conjunction with the development of the John Gwynn Family Aquatic Center and Park, Logan Park renovations, and most recently the Proctor Recreation Center Water Playground and Park. Robert is the recipient of the “1999 Citizen of the Year Award” from Men of Theta Xi, Graduate Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity recognizing outstanding community leadership. In 2000 he received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major Award; and again in January 2012, Robert was awarded the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major Award for Cultural Development.

Robert has served as a member of the Illinois Association of Park District’s Joint Publication Committee, the Joint Distinguished Committee, and on the Program Committee of the Illinois Association of Park Districts. He currently serves on the Joint Operations Committee and the RiverFront Program and Policy Advisory Committee on which he has been a member since 2001. Robert currently serves as Chairman the Recreation Advisory Committee. Robert has previously served as Chairman of the Park District Planning Committee and the Finance Committee.

On behalf of the Park District, Robert has successfully presented grant requests to Illinois Department of Natural Resources for Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grants, including: Logan Park Basketball Courts and Picnic Shelters, $200,000; Proctor Recreation Center Park and Water Playground, $212,500; Southtown/Carver Park Ball fields and Habideck, PHASE II, $200,000; and Mossville Soccer, $393,700.

In 2001, Robert received the “Hometown Hero” award presented by Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for his involvement in bringing the Illinois Association of Park Districts convention to Peoria with some 3,000 participants for a 4-day convention. In 2005, Robert was inducted into South-West Kiwanis.

Robert and Gail have been married for 39 years, and they have four children.
