February: Black History Month By Dr. Latasha Schraeder

I am always looking for opportunities to enrich a child’s life. Movies and books are simple ways to combine family time with learning opportunities! This is the best of both worlds. I am suggesting several movies and books featuring African-Americans to enjoy during the month of February.

Movies that you can relish with your children are The Color of Friendship, March On!, Ballerina’s Tale, Dancing in the Light, Hidden Figures, Disney’s Ruby Bridges, and John Lewis: Good Trouble. There are also numerous books from which to choose, including The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas, Dear Martin by Nic Stone, This is My America by Kim Johnson, Henry’s Freedom Box by Ellen Levin, We March by Shane W. Evans, and The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander.

I sincerely hope you find the time to fall in love with a movie or book with your family this month. I know I am looking forward to watching a few films soon. The weather is perfect for it. Snuggle up and stay warm while you savor these selections!
