Family Traditions By Laraine Bryson

Black History Month is a reminder to honor our history as African Americans and to remember and honor our family traditions. Most African American families sacrificed much to insure the next generation had a better life, full of traditions, values, love and wealth.

One of the traditions passed along in my family, was china and silverware, which was a symbol of longevity and a family heirloom.

I am proud to cherish the 50th Wedding Anniversary China of my great grandparents, Walter & Margaret Howard, from 1908. They were married for 63 years when my great grandmother passed away. The china then went to my grandmother, Mrs. Jessie H. Banks and my mother, Mrs. Wardell E. Graves. It is my hope that this family tradition will be passed to many generations to come!
