Do Not Forget By Katherine Young

Young KatherineIn times like these, we must not forget the backs and shoulders we have stood upon to have the rights and privileges we have today. We must remember the tireless toiling, the sacrifices, the persevering power and prayer of a people who had their eyes on the prize for the future. We must remember and pass on the rich legacy of our people, so that future generations will learn just how important it is to be proactive in living life for a purpose and continue to share our great legacy.

Don’t get so caught up in the tirades of the world, that we forget we are a people of strength, creativity, tenacity, and genius. The greatness of our ancestors such as Sojourner Truth, Thurgood Marshall, Jan Ernst Matzeliger, Countee Cullen, and countless more lived lives with purpose. Remember to keep your eyes on the prize! Know that you are here for a reason, and that you have something, large or small, to contribute to this world.

Keep Your Eyes On the Prize by Katherine Young

So long white cotton—our ancestors persevered

Back-breakin’ bones hurtin’—we possess the whip of freedom

Follow the drinking gourd in the sky

Read a letter or two

To build up a nation

Of engineers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, chefs, and beauticians

Follow that dream in ya’ heart God gave ya—you hear?

So long sharecroppers—I signed my name on the dotted line of my own deed!

Thank you kindly Ancestors for sacrificing your time and your lives,

Yes Ma’am, Yes Sir!

Thank you kindly Ancestors for tellin’ the young to

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!

Do Not Give Up! Do Not Give In!

I will stand for what I believe in!

Do not go astray young people

Fighting each other over materialistic ideals

Untruths that are not a part of your destiny

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!

Do Not Give Up! Do Not Give In!
