BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT By Jannise Bush – Beauty, Health, and Quality of Life

Jannise Bush20160216Corliss Summers is an esthetician and the owner-operator of Skin Deep Facials & WaxingCorliss worked for many years but always wanted to do something on her own. She wanted to start her own business. “I always thought why not me.” She explored several different ideas in her search for independence, including real estate. Corliss was fascinated by the resilience of skin and skin care, how it bounces back from the effects of trauma or stress. She was passionate about helping people feel better about themselves. So, she took her 401K and invested in herself. She was the first African-American female to go through the Tricoci University of Beauty Culture program in Peoria. She passed the test in Springfield to become a licensed esthetician on the first try. Skin Deep Facials & Waxing opened in 2001 and is currently located at 3526 N. California Avenue, Suite 102, Peoria, IL 61603. Corliss has advanced certifications in skin care management for menopause and hormonal dysfunction, skin biology and chemical peels, Microderm abrasion, manual lymphatic drainage, camouflage makeup, and Brazilian and speed waxing.

However, the path to business ownership has not been easy or smooth. In 2007, she took on a partner, but things did not work out, and she moved her business into her home. Because of the move, she lost a lot of customers. So she worked in a spa environment and for a medical spa for a while, but she was still not satisfied working for someone else. She found another partner and opened at her current location. This partnership did not work out either, but Corliss has remained passionate and has not given up. She is committed to helping people through her business. So she works diligently to keep her doors open on her own. “At times I struggle, like all business owners. I’ve learned some lessons along the way; read the fine print, do your research, and be alert for predatory lenders. From a business building perspective, people often think if they “build it people will come.” This is not the case. Consistent marketing to a target audience is crucial. Skin Deep offers great services for men and women concerned about healthy skin and their appearance,” she says.

Facials and waxing are about more than beauty and pampering. “I make people feel good about themselves and specialized skin care can improve one’s quality of life.” Some specific areas of improvement include removing unwanted hair, eliminating calluses/dry skin, improving poor circulation, and eliminating acne/blemishes,” she states.

Waxing is used to remove unwanted body hair. When done by a professional, waxing is a great option that results in complete hair removal and lasts three to six weeks. Unprofessional hair removal may save money but is more risky. Improper hair removal can cause skin irritation and discoloration. If hair is broken off vs. removed at the root, hair will grow back faster and there is greater risk of painful in-grown hair. With home waxing, repeating the process to remove broken-off hair increases the risk of skin irritation/damage.

Dermatologists and podiatrists don’t offer treatments for the skin on hands and feet. Most often, physicians prescribe medications that can cause other problems. Skin Deep provides glycolic deep-treatment massages every six weeks, which improve circulation and allow dead skin to roll off in the shower. No scrubbing or abrasives needed. For the average person, this may not seem like a big deal, but people with poor circulation and chronic foot problems will understand the impact this can have on their day-to-day life.

Acne can have a devastating impact on people’s lives, especially for teenagers, contributing to low self-esteem and being teased/shunned. Magnifying lamps and specialized equipment are used to evaluate the skin’s condition and appearance. Professional skin facials, massages, and extractions will help alleviate acne and other blemishes.
