CARTER AT LARGE │Beyond the Call of Duty by Lorraine B. Carter

I am about love as a Christian, and I try to “spread love” by doing unto others as I would have them do unto me. I pray for my family, friends, and people caught up in catastrophes around the world.

As we fight crime, gun violence, and police abusive behavior, I think we should also remember the police officers who go beyond the call of duty to befriend us. I have had outstanding love and respect shown to me by members of the Peoria Police Department. I will not reveal their names here, but they are unsung heroes and exceptional policemen.

A few years ago, a policeman parked in front of my house and walked to my backyard to see if I was okay because my gate was open (which I always keep locked) and saw me sitting at my table surrounded by a dismantled weed whacker and parts on top of the table. After a few questions, he asked me what I was doing. I told him I was trying to put the gasoline container in its place. After looking the parts over, he also tried unsuccessfully to fit the part in place. After a short while, he politely dismissed himself and answered the call on his car radio. I continued working on the weed whacker to no avail.  I put everything up, swept the patio floor, then retired for the night. Two days later, my doorbell rings; I go to my front door and standing there in his freshly pressed uniform and shiny badge is the slightly blushing, white policeman holding an array of packages. He had a wide smile on his handsome face as he said, “I have a few things for you!” He handed me some brand new battery-powered yard tools (top of the line) ─ a weed whacker, a blower, and instructional books!

I was impressed with his kindness! Every time I hear a siren, I think of him and pray he will be safe!
