Where Do We Go from Here? By Mark Lampkin

By the time you are reading this article, one of two emotions will have swept across our Nation.

We will be ecstatic that in the 2022 mid-term elections, the Democratic party has not only maintained their majority in the House and US Senate, thus allowing President Biden to move aggressively forward and codify long-overdue policies, voting rights for all, abortion rights, etc.

Or, we will feel that sickness and despair akin to what we experienced the morning of Wednesday, November 9, 2016, when it sunk in that a failed businessman, (non)reality show personality and multiple-charged female attacker had been elected President of the US of A.

We wondered, after the 2016 elections, how it could have happened. What had we missed? Who are these of our fellow citizens that saw in Trump anything worthy of being the leader of the “free” world? And why did 100 million voting-eligible Americans stay at home and NOT VOTE?

Historically the party that is in power in the White House loses in the mid-terms. Usually, because the media gives ample airtime to the “minority party,” and their fan base is aggrieved and ready to mobilize and win back their political trophy. Even in years past, prior to 2010, somehow, bills got passed. Laws were enacted. Dems and Repubs made nice long enough to earn their salaries. That has not been the case since 2010 when the Tea Party republicans decided to NEVER assist the first Black POTUS to win at anything. And had his Democratic majority failed at passing the Affordable Care Act BEFORE the 2010 election, we would not have the Obama Care that is saving lives across our land.

And now in 2022, we are faced with the premise of becoming a fascist authoritarian state – turning back the progress made over the past 60 years for Blacks, women and those who identify as LGBTQ. We will become that which our history books told us our grandparents fought to defeat in Nazi Germany.

And yet, as evidenced on January 6, 2021, those men and women who would disrupt and deny the transfer of administrations will feel vindicated. I tremble to think of what we will see them attempt when they have the proverbial winds of state and federal judiciaries on their side. Those who took to the streets with their Tiki torches in Charlottesville and chanted, “Jews will not replace us…” They have now maneuvered into many of the State legislatures around this Nation.

Are you ready for the next January 6th event, where they will have “their” people inside?

Are you ready to demand that this Nation live up to its creed of Liberty and JUSTICE for ALL? Or would you just prefer to go back to watching Thursday Night Football, Days of Our Lives and other similar “programming” that numbs you to the reality of where we are posited to live or just exist?

Where do we go from here…We shall see.

It ALL MATTERS!
