Career Tips to Elevate Your Resume & Land Your Dream Career by Nyrobi Wheeler, MBA

Use these tips to help enhance your resume, attract recruiters and land your dream career!

Career Tip #1: Use Action Verbs – When describing or revamping a resume, it is especially important to use action verbs to describe work responsibilities. Using action verbs such as “implemented,” “organized,” “and mentored,” can make your resume stand out more among recruiters through the Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

Career Tip #2: Industry-Specific Jobs – When enhancing your resume, it is important to use industry-specific job titles throughout your resume, as well as in your professional summary, when applying for a new position. Do some research on LinkedIn or through the Department of Labor to determine industry-specific jobs you are interested in applying for.

Career Tip #3: One vs. Two Page Resumes – It is best to keep your resume to one or two pages only, specifying skills that relate to the position that you want to achieve. If you have multiple experiences in different industries, it is recommended that you create different resumes based on each industry you want to apply in.

Career Tip #4: Avoid Using a Cover Letter – When applying for a position, it is important to make sure that your cover letter matches each position for which you are applying.

Career Tip #5: Grammar and Spelling – This is one of the most important tips of all. Once you have finished developing or refreshing your resume, make sure it is free of grammatical and spelling errors. Microsoft Word is not recommended when checking for spelling and grammar errors, because the software does not catch all these mistakes. The best applications to use include Grammarly or the Hemingway App. Use these applications for career-related documents (i.e., resume, cover letter, references).
