Fall: Goals and a Good Book By Dr. Latasha Schraeder

Fall is arriving, and we are nearing the end of the first quarter of the school year. When your child’s report card arrives, remember grades may be lower than usual. This is to be expected since we have just recently returned to a more typical school day. Grades are just data! Use the data to review and or revise the goals set at the start of the year. I also encourage you to make time to speak with teachers about any concerns you may have.

The cooler temperatures of the fall season will lead to more time indoors. Be careful to limit screen time! Set expectations for reading. Besides, what better way to kill two birds with one stone: accumulating reading time and enjoying a fall-themed book? Listed below are books with ethnically diverse characters for both younger and older children.

Lies Like Wildfire by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez

The Girls Are Never Gone by Sarah Glenn Marsh

In the Leaves by Huy Voun Lee

The Shadow in the Moon: A Tale of the Mid-Autumn Festival by Christine Matula

People in Fall by Martha E.H. Rustad

Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain

The Coldest Touch by Isabel Sterling

Happy reading!
