HOPE AND A FUTURE By Rev. Charity E. Sephus

JER. 29:11 I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

It was a peaceful morning in Colorado Springs, August 2010, and Harry had invited me to lunch. I did not want to disappoint him or appear uninterested, although strange things had been happening to me all morning. My feet were uncomfortable, my hands were feeling weak, and without logic, I felt exceptionally tired. I dressed to impress him, and we went to a special restaurant. My body was giving me detour signs, but sometimes we treat a yellow light and even a red light as if we are colorblind, and because we know our city, we even ignore detour signs saying, “I know a shortcut.” Well, this trouble had no shortcuts. I should have obeyed the detour sign.

Harry had stepped away from the table while I observed the menu, but I thought hunger was the problem when I felt sick. Even with this thought in mind, I was squeezing my neck, holding my pounding head, no feeling over most of my body. It incapacitated me as I tried to stand. But I knew to pray. “Lord, Have Mercy!” as Mother always prayed during life’s trials. In my heart, I hummed my prayer.

DEUTERONOMY 20:4 “For the Lord your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

When Harry reappeared, it seemed a lifetime had passed, and my tears frightened him. With the help of a kind gentleman, he carried me to the car and rushed me to the hospital, which was around the corner where I received urgent care. It was late afternoon when I transferred to another hospital by ambulance with a reckless driver as I prayed, Lord, help me!

EXODUS 14:13-14 Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.

After the traumatic trip to the next hospital, they met me with an attitudinal nurse who ripped the IV from my arm; then a sarcastic nurse who threatened to put me in a ward instead of my semiprivate room, which she probably thought was too good for me. Finally, two ladies assigned to give me therapy who were like angels blessing my needs above obligatory duties. These two worked with me until they discharged me to complete my treatments at home.

2 SAMUEL 22:3-3 the God of my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation my stronghold and my refuge; my savior, you save me from violence. I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.”

They discharged me in a wheelchair and prescribed total bed rest. Felt like a mistake, but soon, I stopped using the cane and the chair. Today, praise God, I am healed by the wounds in His side!

Only God can shoot away the enemy’s plans and reiterate his plans to prosper and not harm me. Plans to give me hope and a future. JER.29:11  May God add a blessing to the readers of this testimony, In Jesus’ Holy name. Amen.
