By the time you read this, it is my sincere hope and prayer that our one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for the Wealthy, is still intact and not under siege by its outgoing POTUS. What we have endured the past four years is almost indescribable – even to those, like me, who count ourselves a wordsmith of varying degrees.
I am writing this article five days before Christmas, two days after a meeting at the White House where Trump and his band of thieves entertained the idea of invoking martial law and installing Trump as the un-elected leader of the United States. Donald Trump, who lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden by more than 7 million votes…has no intention of going away quietly, and if unchecked, without dragging our Nation into the sewer with him and his MAGA minions, who still believe the election was stolen.
Hospitals across our Nation are filled to near-capacity with men, women and children who are infected with the COVID-19 virus. Yes, the virus that we were told by Trump would miraculously just disappear, could by cured ingesting bleach and UV light, and was engineered by China. The ignorance and racism spewed by him and his flag-waving mouthpieces have pushed our already stretched health care system to the brink of collapse.
As of this morning the number of Amercian citizens who have died from this virus stands at just over 320,000. And those numbers will continue to rise through this Christmas season, due in part to the fact that there are yet people who refuse to follow the guidelines given by the scientists.
WEAR A FACE COVERING. PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING.
The rebuilding of our Nation is going to require a great deal of work. We must continue having the difficult conversations about racial inequality. We cannot ignore any longer the growing threat of domestic terrorism being fomented by White nationalists who embody the tactics and beliefs of Hitler’s Nazi regime and the now-deposed 45th POTUS, Donald Trump. We must address the challenges of a spiraling climate crisis. To stick our heads in the sand for any longer places us in a deeper ditch of despair and doom for our future generations.
I pray that we can make it.
ADDENDUM: By now, we know that of today, January 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol was stormed by armed men and women determined to upset and overthrow the due process of confirming the electoral votes for the incoming President and Vice President. In all of my 66 years of living…NEVER would I have expected this. Yet, here we are.
Last night, in the State of Georgia, the run-off election for the two Senate seats was won by the Democratic challengers: Rev. Rafael Warnock and John Ossoff. Make no mistake, what we are witnessing is an attempted coup, and illegal overthrowing, of the US Government by White Supremacists, urged on by the despotic, and duly defeated, Donald Trump.
The fact that none of the armed protestors were fired upon by Capitol Police or the National Guard is yet one more example of the privilege that Whites in this nation have in their favor.
If you doubt that our voting in 2018 and now 2020 – which the Georgia runoff is the completion of the 2020 election, then THINK AGAIN! White supremacists and those who align with them, count on us being apathetic and absent in voting and taking part of this process that is guaranteed by our Constitution and its many Amendments.
NEVER go back to the silence nor the subversion that our ancestors were subjected to. We MUST Fight and remain vigilant as this nation goes through birthing pains of how it will be governed going forward. We are not going to the back of the bus ever again.
