As you know, February is Black History Month. The historical significance of African Americans is the focus of many lessons, celebrations, and projects throughout schools. While best practice dictates curriculums should mirror the lived experiences of students of color, many school districts continue to miss the mark. With that being said, it is not difficult to provide exposure to culturally relevant material at home. In fact, I encourage you to infuse culture into your child’s life throughout the year. There are many ways this can be accomplished, including films, books, and poetry. As a parent, you might enjoy this process!
This month I am recommending several books and films to share with your children.
Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes
Harriet Powers’ journey from Slave to Artist Sewing Stories by Barbara Herkert
Timbaland by Christopher Meyers
