Officers of the Peoria Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People were sworn in by Attorney and former NAACP President, Donald Jackson, on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at the monthly meeting. Officers for 2019-2020 are President Pastor Marvin Hightower; 1st Vice-President Sherry Carter-Allen; 2nd Vice-President Dave Pittman, 3rd Vice-President Nina Gougis; Secretary Sherry Cannon; Assistant Secretary Nia McFarland; Treasurer Jean Polk; and Assistant Treasurer Lorene King.
Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, at 7:00 p.m. at 101 McArthur Highway. Affordable memberships, starting at $30 annually, are open to all who wish to get involved in advocating and supporting the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights for all persons, and to eliminate race-based discrimination.
The Peoria branch of the NAACP which is 104 years old , this year, is also a partner with the Peoria Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in sponsoring ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics), an achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.
