Early one morning I walked with my daughter. Out front to the left, there are very tall trees hiding the skyline, no houses on one side of the street, an incline, and a blind spot at the curve. These all impair a feeling of comfort until the full light of day. Walking in darkness means I must concentrate on safety, my energy level uphill, and what could come around that curve. Wearing a safety belt assures my being seen in the dim morning light, yet it was disconcerting to hear a truck driver suddenly break when I appeared unexpectedly as he came around the curve. Upon arriving back at home, a deep sigh of relief was spontaneous.
To walk the opposite direction there are some well-lit homes, and street lights beam brightly from both sides making it almost like daylight. We can even see early sunlight, and the street declines. Going in this direction there are no curves hiding oncoming traffic which allows me to relax and make it a pleasant meaningful exercise time. “Ah, I feel better going this way,” I said. She tells me of her days and I tell her mine. “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his son purifies us from sin.” Returning home was uphill, victoriously refreshing, and without stress.
Life is perceived as a daily walk! As we sing “WALK WITH ME LORD”, should we invite the Lord to accompany us onto forbidden paths? Our built-in warning mechanism can keep us from choosing the wrong paths. Proverbs 4:11 says, “I have directed you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in upright paths. When you walk your steps will not be hampered [your path will be clear and open]: and when you run you shall not stumble. Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and do not go the path of evil men. Avoid it! Do not go to it! Turn from it and pass on!” The pain of forbidden paths can be alleviated with the consumption of these words of caution. Verse 18 says: The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn that shines brighter and clearer until it reaches its full strength and glory in the perfect day. The vehement warning is so kind!
The way of a good person is like the light of dawn, growing brighter and being prepared by God for a Divine deliverance march, to the land of promise. We can choose the right path and LIVE! Others have rejected it and died. Let us walk in the lighted path of Jesus to see more clearly as we reach the fullness of day.
Dear Lord, “make me walk in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.” (Psalm 119:35) Amen.
