Gen. 1:2 “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep…”
So it’s a Monday morning and you woke up late for work. You are panic stricken and running around in a fury looking for the things you need. You try to get your bearings and place your hands out in front of you, hoping to feel your way to what you need. You know your keys are there. You know your personals are there! The truth is, everything that is in the house has a place, and you know that because you brought it there. Unfortunately, you cannot see it because the lights are off.
The creation account begins with a statement that most of us miss. In the beginning, the Earth was without form and void, and darkness covered the face of the deep. It would be fine if only the Earth was shapeless at the time; but the writer goes on to say that darkness covered the face of the deep. This speaks to the extreme nothingness of a thing without the illumination of Gods glory on it. God is the God of creation. This means that He knows how to look into the darkness, see that it is not final, discover the light, call it out, and make it more than it was originally. God’s brilliance speaks inside of the dark, unfinished reality of a void Earth and calls it into supernatural alignment with His voice. And He eventually calls it good.
Everything has a beginning. Oh if men could see their own lives in Genesis 1:2! Perhaps your life started out rocky; maybe you had some unfortunate things that caused darkness to fall over your present state, and you are uncertain about the future. The word of God is clear in saying that everything is beautiful in its own time, for a piece of eternity is hidden in our hearts (Ecc. 3:11). That literally means God is the maestro who placed a piece of Himself into you and watched the eternal time piece to determine how that beauty comes forth. We get side tracked with comparison. We get frustrated with our timeline and we figure that the darkness covering our dreams and goals is indefinite. This is untrue. Your right now is not your forever!
One of the greatest things about this occurrence is that God did not run away from the darkness. He knew that He was greater than the darkness and so He spoke to it. Speaking gives credence, direction, and authority. But there is also a level of dominance when you use your voice in a situation. God said, “Darkness and void, I see you, but I am not defined by you. You can only be called as such because I am bringing out the exponential opposite.” Your dark situation is final when you speak light and life into it. You can then look back and say, “That was darkness. This is light.” As we approach the end of this year ask yourself, am I afraid of the dark? Your answer changes your reality.
