Youth Music Illinois (formerly the Central Illinois Youth Symphony) has named Laura Jean (L.J.) Alexandre-Strong as Executive Director, replacing Jeff McSweeney who left to accept the Executive Director role of the Mabel Tainter Cultural Arts Center in Menomonie, Wisconsin.
L.J. recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, with a degree in Music and Business. Originally from Peoria, L.J. spent nine years as a violinist and two years as a student conductor with the then Central Illinois Youth Symphony. Throughout her college career she was deeply involved in the music business, co-founding Brandon Rice Events and Entertainment, and interning in Los Angeles.
In her new role as Executive Director of YMI, she will work closely with Music Director David Commanday to grow YMI’s music education programs, which are aimed at elementary, middle and high school students. YMI has three orchestras; string, percussion, brass and woodwind ensembles; and a newly formed jazz group. YMI was founded in 1965, and serves students throughout the Central Illinois area.
