We should always be aware that there is no one answer to that question. There are several different kinds of education and several different processes by which people can be taught. The word “Education” according to Webster, is the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools or the knowledge, skill, and development gained from studying or training. So, you ask yourself, why do I need to know the definition of Education? I merely wanted to point out that there is always going to be a definition, but that does not mean that it is all-inclusive. We must realize that different people learn in different ways. Educators have long searched for the right mix of programs, materials, and training that would increase academic achievement for poor and minority youth particularly.
Personally, I feel that we fall short of educating some of today’s youth because we are educating the children of 2018 with some of the techniques of 1960. But this is not all-inclusive either, we have very well-equipped teachers and teaching methodologies as well as people who care for our children. I think where we fall short is how to use best practices and meet the standardized requirements while meeting the children where they are. A professor once said that today’s children are so far ahead, as it relates to technology and social media, that they have to literally slow all the way down when they come to school to fit into the system that they are expected to abide by.
The inadequate standardized testing processes set by State and Federal Government used today, in my opinion, lacks the ability to diversify the measurement of all kids. Also, we are still taking the kids out of school for summer as we did in the 1960’s when we had to have everyone out for harvesting. So that leaves a large segment of the school population struggling to fit into a system of unfamiliarity.
We have some very talented youth in Peoria Public Schools. Some can display their many talents and others have talents that may need a little more to bring them out. I am convinced that we will be most effective when we are able to use strategies that meet kids where they are and apply positive, supportive environments where there is recognition of the emotional, social and physical needs of students and where individual strengths are recognized, nurtured, and developed.
I have represented and supported the children of Peoria Public Schools because I know the importance of education. I would appreciate your vote for MARTHA ROSS on March 20, 2018, so that I can continue to support the progress toward meeting our kids where they are and helping them get to where they need to be to have a productive career in life.
