2015 African American Hall of Fame Museum Red Black and Green Ball Scholarship Recipients

The African-American Hall of Fame Museum recognized seven scholarship recipients on February 28, 2015 at the Peoria Riverfront Museum. These scholarships seek to inspire African-American achievement by providing funding to assist with college expenses. The scholarship recipients are well-rounded, striving for excellence in academics, while giving back to the community.

The George Gower Scholarship – Cierra Ruffin

Ciera Ruffin

Cierra is a senior at Peoria High School.  She is the daughter of Ronald and Crystal Ruffin.  Cierra has a 3.8/4.0 GPA. She is a member of TSTM, ICC All American Cheer and Illinois State Scholar.  Cierra has received the following awards: Most active volunteer, academic, honor society and pay it forward.  Cierra plans to major in nursing at Southeast Missouri State.

The Doug and Diane Oberhelman Scholarship – Jeremy Green

Jeremy is a senior at Richwoods High School. He is the son of Angela Green. Jeremy has a 3.7/4.0 GPA.  He is a member of the interact club, 1st robotics programmer, Mural painters volunteer, cross-country, a drum major, OSF volunteer and is a candidate for Boy Scout Eagle award.  Jeremy plans to major in computer science at Purdue University.

The Jamere Jackson Scholarship – Chelsea Jones-Mullen

Chelsea is a senior at Richwoods High School.  She is the daughter of Lemaya Jones-Mullins.  Chelsea has a 3.4/4.0 GPA.  She is a member of the Interact club, St. Jude club, IB (International Baccalaureate club).  She is a member of the volleyball team and is the school mascot.  Chelsea has received the Big 12 school athlete award.  She plans to major in Athletic Training at the University of Tampa.

Trinity is a senior at Peoria High School.  She is the daughter of Chanelle Maclin.  Trinity has a 3.9/4.0 GPA and is ranked 1st in her class. She is the senior cheerleading captain.  A member of the Senior prep school of arts specifically dance and is a member of the senior pride team and student council.  Trinity is an Illinois State Scholar and has received the Lincoln senior award.  Trinity plans to major in nursing at the University of North Florida.

The Willie G. Brown Scholarship – Blake Mitchell

Blake Mitchell

Blake is a senior at Bloomington High School. He is the son of Phillip and Mary Mitchell.  Blake has a 5.39 GPA.  He’s won the Academic Achievement Award twice, Minority Achievement Award four times, Chemistry Award and he’s the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) 2015 – 2016 State Scholar.  He’s the President of French Club and Key Club secretary.  He plays the Violin for the Bloomington/Normal Youth Symphony where he has played in the Spring Musical Pit Orchestra and preformed a Solo/Ensemble.  Blake plans to major in International Politics at the American University of Paris in Paris, France.

Dara is a senior at Normal Community High School. She is the daughter of Delilah Johnson and Fred Williams.  Dara has a 4.93 GPA.  She’s a Member of National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars, won the 2013 Rotary Youth Leadership Award, a Competitive level 10 gymnast; she’s the 2014 Most Valuable Gymnast.  She is also on the Student Council, Jack & Jill of America, Cooks meals at Salvation Army, Bell Ringer for Salvation Army, volunteers at an Assisted Living facility.  Dara plans to major in Biology at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

Breanna is a senior at Bloomington High School. She is the daughter of Susie Vigil and Stew Fairley.  Breanna has a 4.6 GPA. She won the Illinois Wesleyan Academic Achievement Award twice, won the Bloomington High School Academic Achievement Award twice, won the Bloomington High School Monogram Award twice, won the University of Illinois Salute to Academic Achievement, won the Big 12 Scholar Athlete Award twice and the IHSA Scholar Athlete Award three times. She is also on the Student Council, Key Club and she plays Varsity Basketball, Cross Country and Track.  Breanna plans to major in Journalism at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.
