“Preparing for Success in the New Millennium”

The Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce (ILBCC) will assist businesses to “Prepare for Success” during the 11th Annual Convention August 23 – 24, 2016 at the Par-A-Dice Hotel in East Peoria, Illinois. The ILBCC is the largest Black Trade organization in Illinois and advocates on behalf of Black businesses throughout the state. The ILBCC was recently awarded the “Chamber of the Year” by the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) during their 24th Annual Convention July 20 – 24, 2016 in New Orleans.

The conference opens on Tuesday, August 23rd with a Procurement Opportunity Fair from 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM. Business owners will have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with over 15 companies and agencies’ procurement executives and decision makers.

A Welcome Reception Jamaican style will follow and include a workshop on “The Business of Politics and the Politics of Business”, networking opportunities, and live entertainment. This event will be highlighted by special award presentations. Celebrity guest include record producer, actor, entrepreneur, and ILBCC Board Member Bryce Wilson; J. Alexander Martin, Co-Founder FUBU (“For Us By Us”) and President/CEO A Fashion Mind; and Ed Lover, rapper, actor, musician, radio personality, and former MTV VJ.  

The conference continues Wednesday, August 24th with Breakfast, followed by an Opening Ceremony with Governor Rauner and other dignitaries, eight workshops, and a Networking Luncheon. Speakers include top executives from Nicor Gas; ComEd; Ameren Illinois; Peoples Gas; Central Management Services; Capital Development Board; the Illinois Tollway; and the Secretary of Transportation to name a few.

The Information Technology, Marketing/PR, and Black Media Workshop will include utilizing big box data, using social media to drive business (blogging, twitter, and Facebook), “Star Power”, and the importance of Black Media.

The Utility Panel has some of the foremost Presidents, CEO’s, and top executives in the industry discussing where we are headed, the biggest challenges in the industry, and where the opportunities are. Participating companies include ComEd, Ameren Illinois, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas, and Illinois American Water.

Other workshops include: Construction; Banking and Finance/Capital Access with DCEO, the SBA, and various banks; A Mayoral Round Table with five Mayors from across the state discussing integrating minority participation into their city’s projects; Government Procurement Opportunities with state agencies such as Central Management Services, the Illinois Tollway, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Chicago O’Hare Airport; a Technology Panel with some of the top companies in the field; and an International Trade workshop with information on getting ready to do business globally in Jamaica, Africa, Canada, Columbia, and Brazil .

The Networking Luncheon will include guest speakers Dr. Carla Hightower, MD and Dr. Jeffery E. Sterling, MD, MPH. Dr. Hightower is a Physician, Health and Corporate Wellness Coach, and Founder of Living Health Works. She also writes a blog on the subject of “food as medicine” at livinghealthworks.com. Dr. Jeffery E. Sterling is President/CEO of Sterling Initiatives, LLC, Sterling Emergency Medicine Solutions, and Sterling Medical Advice. He is a national and international advisor, entrepreneur, consultant, speaker, and author specializing in public health, consumer healthcare education and prevention, hospital and provider administration, global healthcare infrastructure, and pharmacoeconomics. 

This year’s convention concludes with a signature Awards Gala from 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM recognizing businesses and corporations for their outstanding contributions and success. The Mistress of Ceremony is Michelle Relerford, General Assignment Reporter and fill in Anchor for NBC News 5. The Keynote speaker for the event is Courtney Betty, President/CEO Timeless Herbal Care. Mr. Betty began his legal career with the Department of Justice Canada and then joined the Jamaica Fair Trade Commission where he developed a framework for the deregulation of telecom. Throughout his legal career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to social justice and equity as recognized by the city of Toronto, which awarded him the William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations, and by the province of Ontario through the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Mr. Betty now brings his legal and business experience to the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industry.
