There is a new community center in Peoria in the East Bluff, the Get Up Community Center (GUCC)! The founder and visionary, Robert Cockfield II, grew up in this great city and he desires to create life transforming opportunities similar to the ones that he encountered as a child and growing teen. Mr. Cockfield attributes his success in life to God and the stern, yet loving community leaders that influenced his life in a profound manner. It is believed that had he been void of this influence his life would have turned out very differently.

Get Up Community Center is a 501C3 non-profit organization that provides psychological, social, economical, physical, spiritual and educational services to the surrounding community in the Greater San Antonio, TX, area. The services provided have had such a great impact in Texas that the decision was made to expand this proven model to Peoria. The Peoria satellite location will provide many of the same services to meet the needs of their targeted demographic area. GUCC has hosted Community Game Nights for adults which have been a great success. They have had the opportunity to partner with Sodexo and Dist.150 for the Summer Food Program where they have served lunches to the children of the East Bluff to help ensure their readiness for the upcoming school year.

Currently they are hosting a program called “Dominoes-More Than A Game.” The creator of this program is the National Domino World Champion, Mr. Travis Newsome. Mr. Newsome has developed this program to aid students in problem analysis, critical thinking, structure, discipline and, most importantly, enhancing math skills. Mr. Newsome travels weekly to Peoria from Naperville, IL and they have already witnessed a change in the children’s skill level and their attitudes toward becoming “Champions.”GUCC’s goal is to continue programs such as this to empower rand help grow individuals to have positive influence which will enhance the community in which they live.
