The New Thing By Cleo Dailey, III — Shine!

By Cleo Dailey, III

2 Corinthians 4:8-10

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.” Matthew 5:14

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” Proverbs 9:4

Cleo Dailey, III (Modern-day Lazurus)Eleven murders in the span of less than 6 months. Poverty is on the rise. Famine is abroad. Hunger is real. Rage is evident. Riots are on the rampage. Frustration is a constant companion it seems. And in the words of the poet laureate Grand Master Flash, “Don’t push me ’cause I’m close to the edge. I’m trying not to lose my head. It’s like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from going under.”

Have you ever looked at any form of news or social media and yearned to return to a soft pillow and warm comforter? The recent life events of this world and our community are enough to make you either want to go back to bed and start the day over, or sleep in until things somehow get better. It is almost impossible to look out your window and see a reason to smile. What then can we do?

Solomon was so brilliant in asking for wisdom. To gain proper understanding of climate is to inaugurate climate control. Once you control the climate, you control the elements that happen in that climate. For years, it seems that our approach as a community and as a society has been “reactive”. We allow what will be, and then we reactively respond to situations with a semblance of positivity. This is counter active defeatism at its best. We who are possessors of light must shine that light. We must shine it so loudly and proactively so that when all the world presses against it, they only see more light. We must remember that we are in the world but not OF the world. Times like these remind us all too well that there is a vast difference between professors of light and possessors of light. A quote won’t help. A complaint won’t help. And as much as I adore church, a service will not help. This world is crying out for the power of God to be revealed. The Bible speaks expressly in Romans 8:19 that “the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” The world is not waiting for us to conform. The world is not waiting for us to coo them until something else happens. The world is waiting for the sons and daughters of God to shine brilliantly and unapologetically! They are waiting for us to lift the standard of God in every facet of our lives. This is because they are looking for hope. They are looking for an answer that is beyond a band-aid on a bullet wound (no pun intended). Solomon knew that even a dead lion in all of its array cannot withstand a living dog. Is the church dead? Or are we merely sleeping, not aware of our power to illuminate.

As a living organism, the body of Christ has to know that we are far more powerful than anything that comes to beset us. When going into a battle proactively, you see a different vantage point. Shift your focus today, from reactive to proactive. As the world yearns for more understanding, don’t hide your light. Shine bright so that as they join to this living thing, they find hope. Our nation, our city, our children, and our tomorrow are depending on you. Shine your light.
